(This post was lifted almost verbatim from an offer I made within an amazing linkedin discussion about social media going on right now.)
The time has come to talk of many things of cabbages and kings…
Here comes the punchline: there is a ton of good information here. AND good examples of both sides of the CRAP-line. On one side you have got the cSM folks and on the other side you have the SMP (social media professional) and along the way you have a smattering of SMEs (we used to use this term to mean subject matter expert, but today I am using it for Social Media Explorer, meaning, students, people new to LinkedIN, people just getting their feet wet.)
Here’s my proposal, while this discussion will rave on, I would propose that we begin the dissection of the content here and begin reassembling it on a platform where we can ALL participate freely and where Kevin’s offensive post, snarky smile doesn’t greet me everytime I come to read what others are contributing.
A year ago I started an idea called socialwiki.org and wikisocial.org. The idea was to build a wikipedia-like site open to everyone to carry on just this kind of discussion. Well, I lead the Tribe for a bit, but it never took off. At least NOTHING like this group. So, for any like-minded professionals, explorers and crap-o-logists alike, I now invite you to http://www.wikisocial.org/about-wikisocialorg
Here’s the mission statement that I wrote over a year ago.
+++
Wikisocial.org was launched on Dec. 13, 2008 as the community and discussion side of “The Open Source Directory of Social Media and Communities” And Socialwiki.org is the wiki side where the MediaWiki instance went live about an hour ago. [Dec. 18, 2008] We sincerely hope you find an interesting dialogue progressing on this site and that you decide to join us as part of our virtual team.
Mission Statement
* Provide an open wiki platform and community tools to dialogue, collect, annotate and educate ourselves
* Create, track, and share thought leadership
* Provide access to the social media tools without advertising, marketing or corporate sponsorship
* Total transparency – no hidden elite
* Shake up the status quo

What I lacked back then, after I launched the sites was additional leaders who were willing to put in the time and guidance to drive either site beyond my initial construction. While I could drive some of the chats and lead some of the initiatives, the TRIBE (as defined by Seth Godin) never self-actualized.
Perhaps there are a few people in this thread who would like to gather, capture and catalog some of the insights we have learned in the past 1,700+ comments.
Here’s what you do if you want to lead on socialwiki.org (wiki) or wikisocial.org. (blog). Sign in to either site and create an account. Of course it’s free and painless. [I AM NOT SELLING ANYTHING! NOR AM I PROMOTING MYSELF.]
What I am selling is an opportunity to pick up the Tribe I attempted to gather back in DEC 08 – APR 09. It’s all summed up in our slogan.
“Through leadership we all become leaders.”
SocialWiki.org – Building a comprehensive taxonomy and conversation about Social Media and evolving how we use the conversations that connect us and divide us on the internet.
